A buyer drives past your listing, sees the sign, scans the code. Three seconds later they are touring the property from the driver's seat. That is the upside. The downside is that most real-estate QR codes squander the moment by pointing at the wrong page.
The most common mistake
Most QR codes on real-estate signage link to the portal listing. The buyer scans, lands on a cluttered page full of competitor listings and banner ads, and bounces. The portal page is built for search, not for conversion from a cold scan.
“The signage delivers the buyer. Your destination converts them — or loses them.”
Where the QR code belongs
- Yard signs — the 24/7 billboard; bottom corner, 2–3 inches square, high contrast.
- Window vinyls — at street-facing eye level for drive-by and foot traffic.
- Directional signs leading to an open house — lets buyers preview before they arrive.
- Print brochures and property flyers — scannable from the hand.
- Open-house sign-in sheets and business cards — keeps the page accessible after the visit.
Generating one that works
Start with the destination URL — your property website. Shorten it via Bitly or a custom shortener for analytics. Generate the QR code at high error correction (level M or Q) so it survives weather and wear. Export as SVG for print and at least 300×300 PNG for digital. Test it on multiple devices from six to ten feet away before printing.
Design rules that matter
- High contrast — black on white beats every colour combination.
- At least 2–3 inches square on a yard sign; smaller fails at scan range.
- Add a short call-to-action: 'Scan to tour' or 'Scan for details.'
- Eye level — buyers should not have to crouch or squint.
- Never link to a desktop-only page; the majority of scans are on mobile.
Tracking the scan
A short-link with analytics tells you total scans, device, and geography. Are scans clustered on weekends? Are they local — qualified buyers in the area — or remote investors? Use the pattern to schedule open houses and tailor follow-up.
